Regional differences in heterogeneous thermochemical geodynamo simulations

Abstract

As the core loses heat to the mantle, the inner core solidifies releasing both latent heat and light elements into the overlying fluid. This drives thermochemical convection that powers the geodynamo. We have performed numerical simulations of that convection, considering both the different diffusivities of the chemical and thermal components, and the different chemical and thermal boundary conditions that the mantle imposes on the core. Regions with inverted density gradients that suppress convection at the top of the core form in these simulations, due to both compositional and thermal effects. These regional inversion lenses (RILs) are ubiquitous across a wide range of parameter space. Compositional RILs tend to form in polar regions, whereas thermal RILs form beneath the (hot) Large Low Velocity Provinces in the mantle. If they are sufficiently strong and thick, these RILs could have magnetic or seismic signatures.
