The GIST-Hub

Advancing inclusive Governance and Innovation for Sustainability Transitions in partnership with Europe and Latin America

This page is currently under construction.

The GIST-Hub is the interdiscplinary platform for building a longterm partnership between Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC) in the field of sustainability transitions. It was launched in 2025 and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in Germany (BMBF).

International Partnership

The GIST-Hub brings together researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers from Europe and Latin America to foster sustainable innovation and inclusive governance. LMU and UC jointly create a network that promotes long-term cooperation through workshops, exchanges, and joint projects, advancing solutions for global challenges related to sustainable resource management and climate change. The current partners are:

Collaborative Research

The GIST-Hub drives innovative research to support sustainability transitions, with a focus on new governance and innovation models. Apart from basic research in areas such as mining and resource industries, climate adaptation, circular economies, and social equity, our interdisciplinary collaboration generates impactful insights for policy and practice. Current projects associated with the GIST-Hub are:

Governance Case Method

At the heart of our research lies the Governance Case Method — an innovative approach to analyzing real-world governance challenges through comparative, evidence-based case studies. This method allows us to systematically capture and assess diverse governance models and their practical applications in sustainability transitions. By integrating perspectives from multiple disciplines and stakeholders, we develop comprehensive frameworks that address social, economic, and environmental complexities. The Governance Case Method not only supports academic research but also directly informs policy and practice by offering decision-makers practical tools to analyze governance scenarios and develop inclusive, context-specific strategies. Our Governance Case Canvas and database are continuously updated with insights from ongoing projects and collaborations, making them valuable resources for both researchers and practitioners.

Study Program for Decision Makers

The knowledge gained from collaborative echange, networking and research at the GIST-Hub is made available in the Inclusive Governance and Innovation in Sustainability Transitions Diploma (Diplomado). This program is designed to train change agents with latested knowledge on how to address the most pressing governance challenges of our time. The program blends cutting-edge theoretical knowledge with practical skills, offering participants a unique opportunity to learn from experts at the forefront of sustainability research and governance innovation. The study program consists of four comprehensive modules covering sustainability transitions, governance and innovation models, the Governance Case Method, and practical tools for change agents. Delivered through a flexible online format, it includes interactive lectures, case studies, and real-world applications. Participants will gain valuable insights into building inclusive and sustainable governance frameworks, preparing them to make impactful decisions in both public and private sectors. The GIST Diploma starts in 2028.
