I studied geophysics and did my PhD in numerical mathematics and scientific computing, which provide the foundation of research interests. Working in the industry as a seismic engineer and later on as an Emmy Noether Research Group Leader in earthquake simulation clearly moved my interests into the direction of applied modeling and simulation to help resolving practical questions and problems. Since 2011 I moved into the field of seismic hazard and risk modeling especially for the insurance industry and showed me that there is still a lot to learn from each other, academia and insurance industry, to gather forces for improved modeling results, so I continued teaching young researchers to get an impression of what real-world problems still have not been solved satisfyingly and why.
My research interests are currently focusing on the assessment of seismic hazard and risk including secondary perils like tsunami or liquefaction. Probabilistic modeling approaches as well as deterministic scenario simulations play an important role and new methodologies to reduce uncertainties are of main interest in that field.
