Westend Kids im Westend Kiez - Kinder in der autogerechten Stadt

Overview
At primary school age, children increasingly move around their neighborhood independently. They explore the neighborhood on their way to school on foot, on a scooter or by bike. This makes children
both important and vulnerable road users.
Key Themes
Our project examines how children perceive their neighborhood and move around in it. The focus is on questions of conflict-free use of public space by different road users and modes of transport as well as aspects of the quality of life. Aspects of road safety in general, and accidents involving children in particular, are given special attention.
Research Approach
As part of the project seminar, one working group will carry out an analysis of the parking space in the Westend neighborhood in order to better understand the influence of stationary traffic on children's road safety. A second working group will examine the children's perspective on mobility in the Westend neighborhood. With the help of a child-friendly map, families, parents or schoolchildren can mark places in the neighborhood that are important to them. These can be favorite playgrounds or places that are avoided, for example. Children can also take photos of places or things in the neighborhood and comment on them. The methods mentioned are particularly suitable due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, as they reduce contact, maintain social distancing and still allow suitable data to be collected.
