SZ article "Munich researches for a better world"

7 Jan 2025

The afforestation study led by Yiannis Moustakis is among the research breakthroughs from Munich in 2024.

The Süddeutsche Zeitung highlights seven studies from LMU in its series showcasing the breakthroughs achieved by the scientists at Munich’s excellence universities in 2024. One of these is the publication by Yiannis Moustakis, Tobias Nützel, Wenkai Bao, and Julia Pongratz, which explored the climate protection potential of ambitious afforestation. The researchers showed that while the current afforestation targets set by the international community may not be a magic bullet against climate change, their full implementation could slow down global warming and mitigate temperature spikes.

The study was published in the fall of 2024 and quickly gained attention also outside the scientific community. For example, an animation of our model simulations was featured at the German Pavilion at the World Climate Conference in Baku.
