el mundo wins the 2020 LMU Munich Teaching Innovation Award for the interdisciplinary anchoring of ESD in teacher training
The LMU Teaching Innovation Award recognizes teachers who develop and implement innovative teaching concepts. The systematic integration of research and practical orientation into teaching is one of the aims of the lehre@lmu program as part of the Teaching Quality Pact. The prizes are awarded annually by LMU. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the award ceremony took place online as a Zoom event for the first time. A welcoming speech by Professor Oliver Jahraus, Vice President for Student Affairs at LMU, was followed by short presentations by former award winners, who described their careers since being honored.
From the laudation: With the “el mundo - Education for Sustainable Development” project, the university management is recognizing an additional course of study in which student teachers of all subjects and school types can acquire a certificate in the field of education for sustainable development. The certificate can be obtained within a standard period of study of five semesters and comprises 30 ECTS modules from six faculties. The certificate prepares students for the challenges of a globalized world and raises awareness of aspects of sustainability in the classroom. In addition to the topicality of the subject matter, the jury was impressed by the variety of methods used in this course, the close cooperation between academics working together on a teaching subject and the close networking with civil society initiatives. The development of the teacher's personality along a cross-cutting theme that links learning in practice with subject-specific content from various disciplines seems to the jury to be an approach that should have a broad impact. It hopes that it will also become a model for other universities.
We would like to thank the selection committee for their appreciation of our work and the importance they attach to anchoring education for sustainable development in university teaching.
We would also like to thank all of our cooperation partners, many of whom come from Munich's urban society and help to ensure that the dialog between science and society in the field of sustainable development continues to flourish.
Finally, we would also like to thank the students of el mundo, whose commitment helps to shape and develop the program itself time and again.
