To all our new and returning Geography students at LMU, we wish you an exciting journey ahead, full of discovery and learning both inside and outside the lecture hall. You've likely already heard advice like “stay on top of your lectures” or “start revising early for finals.” Sound advice, no doubt. But here are three tips to help you start your Geography studies with a fresh perspective—whether it's your first semester or not.
1) Master Your Methods
In Geography, tools like statistics, Remote Sensing, and Geoinformation Systems (GIS) are your research powerhouses. The more methods you learn, the more diverse your approach to tackling complex research questions will be. And remember, cross-validation is key: It's not just about mastering one method but also about ensuring your results hold up when using different approaches. This broadens your skill set and deepens your research credibility.
2) Sharpen your Geographical Gaze
One of the best things about Geography? It’s happening around you every day. With open eyes, you'll start seeing the world through a geographic lens. How do different regions handle extreme weather? How do cultural institutions impact local economies? And how can cities become more sustainable, both ecologically and socially? Let the world be your classroom and apply your learning in real life.
3) Find your Geographical Passion
Geography covers a broad spectrum of topics, from climate change impacts on ecosystems and societies to urban planning and economic development. Use your early semesters to explore these diverse areas, then narrow down what fascinates you most. Whether it's sustainability, urban resilience, or spatial economics, focus on your passion and work toward becoming an expert.
We’re here to support you every step of the way. Best of luck, and enjoy your Geography journey!
