1st Meeting of the Scientific Network “Leverage Points for Climate Action”

19 Sept 2024

A new project the DFG-Scientific Network “Leverage Points for Climate Action” will hold its first out of three workshops in Munich.

The network is coordinated by Dr. Jan Petzold (LMU) and Dr. Maraja Riechers (Thünen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries) and brings together 16 young researchers from Germany and abroad specialising on topics such as climate change adaptation, mitigation, energy transitions, sustainable development, and social-ecological sustainability transformations.

Leverage points are places in a system where a small shift may lead to fundamental changes in the system as a whole. The network aims to provide a platform for discussing insights on the conceptual and empirical state of research on leverage points to counter climate change from different disciplinary perspectives by focusing on the three realms of leverage: re-structure, re-connect and re-think.

The DFG Leverage Points Network will meet on the 10th & 11th of October 2024 for the first time and focus on the realm re-structure, including the question how to analyse the capability of institutions to effectively deal with adaptation, mitigation and transformation pathways regarding climate change.

Two guest experts will contribute keynote speeches and reflections on our discussions. Prof. David J. Abson from the Leuphana University Lüneburg, is the leading expert on the leverage points concept. Furthermore, Prof. Matthias Garschagen from the Department of Geography at LMU is one of the leading global experts in topics related to climate change adaptation.
