Julia Pongratz is a Professor of Physical Geography and Land Use Systems at LMU Munich and head of the Joint Group "Land Use in the Earth System" with the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg. Her main research focuses on feedback mechanisms between humans, climate, and vegetation in the past and future, drivers of anthropogenic emissions, and advanced Earth system modeling. A key area of interest is how we can manage land in a way that allows us to adapt to climate change while simultaneously reducing emissions. She is a member of the CAS Young Center.
Julia Pongratz has published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles, including in Nature, Science, and PNAS. Her recent research includes 10 New Insights in Climate Science (2020), A Horizon Scan, Global Sustainability (2021), and Global and Regional Drivers of Land-Use Emissions in 1961-2017, Nature (2021).
In this special lecture titled, "CO2 Removal from the Atmosphere: Opportunities and Risks," she will present the key findings from the CDRterra project to the Munich public. The lecture will be held in German. Admission to the lecture is free. To promote the interest of young people in geographical topics, all geography teachers in the Munich S-Bahn area are invited to bring their class or course to the lectures, as deemed suitable. Since only 2-3 guest classes can be accommodated per lecture, it is kindly requested that contact be made with the office via email as early as possible to register for a lecture, where the guest list is managed (ggm@geographie.uni-muenchen.de).
