Monika Korte from GFZ Potsdam will present her research in a lecture entitled "Knowns and unknowns of geomagnetic reversals and excursions". The lecture will be held in English.
ECS co-host this time is Harini Thiyagarajan.
The DeepDyn seminar takes place online as a zoom-meeting. DeepDyn members will automatically receive the access link before the seminar. We ask external seminar guests to register for the seminar in order to receive the access link.
Knowns and unknowns of geomagnetic reversals and excursions
Abstract
We are used to being surrounded by a geomagnetic field, that is strongly dipolar and slightly tilted with respect to Earth‘s rotation axis. However, through geological history the magnetic field has reversed its polarity multiple times, in short excursions or full reversals. A growing number of paleomagnetic records provides information about these extreme events. It seems clear that they all go along with drastic reductions of global field intensity and the field becomes multipolar, but many open questions remain. Here I give an overview over knowns and unkonwns about geomagnetic reversals and excursions from the data perspective.
