New core messages: dynamical interpretations of geomagnetic variations across time scales
Abstract
The geomagnetic signal is a rich source of information on the Earth structure, on the internal dynamics of its fluid core and on the history of our planet. The generation of Earth’s magnetic field through a dynamo process involves a large disparity of space and most specifically time scales, from below a year to billion years. Since the advent of observatory magnetic field measurements, much attention has been dedicated to explaining variations occurring on time scales of decades to centuries and explaining their links with convective motion inside the core. Global and continuous satellite coverage is available since about twenty years, and this has given access to a new wealth of observations on interannual to decadal variations. In this presentation, I will provide an overview of current research aiming at explaining the interannual geomagnetic variations in terms of rapid hydromagnetic waves propagating in the core, illustrate their interplay with the slower core convection, and the potential new sources of geophysical information that they represent.
