Erasmus+ project on Service Learning and ESD successfully completed

On May 31, 2026, our Erasmus+ project “Shaping the Future: Service-Learning for Education for Sustainable Development” came to a successful conclusion after a year and a half of collaboration.

Together with our partners from the Learning Through Engagement (LdE) Foundation in Berlin, the New Horizons Foundation, and the Pavel Dan School in Romania, we developed a framework that combines service-learning (SL) with education for sustainable development (ESD).

In addition to regularly sharing our experiences, we conducted interviews in the summer of 2025 with teachers who already had experience with service-learning (as well as ESD). The insights gained from these interviews were directly incorporated into the development of our framework.

Among the highlights of the collaboration were the two on-site project meetings: in May 2025 in Munich, Germany and in March 2026 in Cluj, Romania. During the meeting in Cluj-Napoca, we discussed the final adjustments to the framework and also had the opportunity to visit our partner school, Pavel Dan, in Câmpia Turzii. There, the students provided us with fascinating insights into their service-learning projects in the field of sustainable development.

We benefited greatly from the expertise of our partner organizations and found the personal exchanges in Munich and Cluj to be particularly enriching. The central project outcome—our framework—is now available free of charge. The handbook is available for download in three languages (German, English, and Romanian) on the project website.

Whether you already have experience with service-learning and education for sustainable development or are new to this field, the handbook offers valuable insights, practical examples, and concrete guidance for working with students in schools and universities.

In the coming weeks, we will be revising the project website, conducting the final evaluation of the project, and preparing the final report. We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone who contributed to the project’s success. We also extend our special thanks to the European Union for co-funding the project.
