Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) and the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) will hold a joint seminar on “Engaging Learners in Sustainability: Exploring Socio-Scientific and Environmental Challenges”on October 6 and 7, 2026. The event will focus on sustainability education and the intersection of environmental science, educational research, psychology and emerging technologies. Its aim is to strengthen international and interdisciplinary exchange and develop joint perspectives on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
Representing LMU at the seminar will be Prof. Dr. Ralf Ludwig, head of el mundo, and Dr. Katrin Geneuss, el mundo coordinator. Ludwig will co-chair the session “Interdisciplinary Environmental Science and Education for Sustainable Development” together with a colleague from EdUHK. He will also give a short keynote on “Climate Change and Sustainability in Forest Ecosystems – ESD for Forest Literacy.” His contribution will address the importance of Education for Sustainable Development and forest literacy in the context of climate change and the challenges facing forest ecosystems.
Dr. Katrin Geneuss will contribute as a co-organiser and chair of the session “Educational Psychology & Learner Engagement for Sustainability.” In her short keynote, “From Place to Participation: Cultivating Engagement for a Sustainable Future,” she will explore how learners can be engaged with sustainability issues and empowered to participate in shaping a sustainable future.
The seminar addresses key areas of interest for el mundo: sustainability is not only to be taught as a subject, but also embedded in research and teaching through interdisciplinary approaches and innovative educational strategies. Alongside sustainability-related topics, the programme will explore AI and digital innovations in education, psychological factors influencing learning and sustainable development, and the use of emerging technologies in teaching and learning.
The second day of the programme will include a visit to a nature reserve or ecotourism site, as well as an exchange on AI literacy and AI in education at a primary school. The seminar will conclude with discussions on potential research collaborations in the fields of AI and Education and sustainability.
