On track of our food's origin

The City Walks visit three different everyday places: a supermarket, a market stall and a bakery. Using a tablet, children can learn about important aspects of nutrition, sustainability, and our impact on the environment.

At the 'Walk Market Stall', students interview the market stall owner to find out more about how fruit and vegetables are grown and where they come from. They also discuss water consumption and the use of pesticides in agriculture, and learn about a sustainable solidarity farming initiative in Munich.

The aim of the "Walk Supermarket" is to make students aware of the origins and cultivation of cocoa and its processing into chocolate, and to present concrete, more sustainable options. It also encourages students to be more conscious and local in their food choices and to use packaging sustainably by looking at transport routes, associated CO2 emissions, packaging and recycling.

The "Walk Bakery" aims to educate students about the problem of food waste and present an initiative for food rescue and climate protection. It also provides information about the waste of resources and CO2 emissions in the production and transport of food, with the aim of encouraging conscious and economical consumption.

A central aspect of City Walks is that participants exchange ideas in groups and actively incorporate their own life experiences into their reflections. The tablet provides text, video, and audio input, food for thought, and instructions. Students experience shopping from a different perspective and test their knowledge and understanding of sustainable concepts in various task formats.

There are currently three German-language City Walks, with English versions in the pipeline. Another version is conceivable that transfers the gamification approach to the upper grades of Bavarian high schools and delves even deeper into the complex interrelationships between economics, ecology, and social issues. Versions for elementary schools are available on request.

This project by el mundo was originally realized in collaboration with Orte des Wandels e.V., coordinated by the Munich Science Communication Lab (MSCL), and funded by the Volkswagen Foundation.

Further training

In addition to the City Walks, you can complete two independent training modules free of charge. These interactive, video-based modules will quickly teach you all the skills and materials you need to successfully use them in your lessons.
