Nature-based Solutions to meet EU Nature Restoration Targets: Evaluating synergies and trade-offs across Ecosystem Services for biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, and resilience and autonomy improvement.

The EU Nature Restoration Law requires Member States to restore 20% of land and sea by 2030 and all degraded ecosystems by 2050. Achieving these goals demands effective strategies for restoring habitats, enhancing biodiversity, and revitalizing urban green spaces. Nature-based Solutions (NbS) offer a promising path, yet their benefits for human well-being remain uncertain.

EVESNAT evaluates how NbS can support biodiversity and well-being under this law. Through stakeholder co-created scenarios and quantitative analyses of ecosystem services, the project will generate practical, transferable guidelines and case studies to improve governance, guide restoration planning, and foster transformative change across Europe’s ecosystems.

EVESNAT is a research project of the eurac Institute for Alpine Environment, led by Prof. Uta Schirpke.
