We attended the 14th EARSeL Workshop in Helsinki

Tobias Hank and Stefanie Steinhauser attended the 14th EARSeL Workshop on Imaging Spectroscopy in Helsinki where they introduced our new project D2D, presented latest results from the CaRMA campaign and even won a prize! It was a super intense and inspiring week at Aalto University in Espoo, bringing together the entire Hyperspectral Remote Sensing research community. Researchers from around the world exchanged ideas, discussed emerging challenges, explored new collaborations, and presented their latest research.

Presenting a new project and first results

Tobias introduced our new D2D project, that uses satellite data and computer models to create a “digital twin” of farm fields, helping farmers understand exactly what crops need. By making fertilizer use more precise and efficient, it aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make agriculture more sustainable. He also presented first results from the 2025 CaRMA campaign: Hyperspectral satellite data can help monitor crop health, but frequent observations are still limited. In 2025, Tobias and his team collected regular crop measurements in southern Germany using satellites, aircraft, and ground sensors. The resulting dataset will help improve vegetation monitoring methods and prepare for future missions such as CHIME.

Stefanie's presentation won the 3rd place at the Young Scientist Competition!

She explained how well hyperspectral algorithms can track changing crop conditions throughout the growing season when compared with real field measurements. She combines hyperspectral satellite data and machine learning to monitor crop nitrogen content and plant residues. The results show strong potential for improving agricultural monitoring from space.
