In an interview with Tagesschau on 13 November 2024, Department Head Prof. Dr. Julia Pongratz discusses the latest findings of the Global Carbon Project—an international research initiative that quantifies global greenhouse gas emissions and involves several other researchers from the Department of Geography.

The report shows that global CO₂ emissions from the use of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas will continue to rise in 2024. A reversal of this trend is not in sight. How, then, can we still achieve our climate goals?

Pongratz stresses: “The top priority is to reduce our CO₂ emissions. At the same time, we need CO₂ removal from the atmosphere to compensate for the hard-to-avoid residual emissions.”

The Tagesschau broadcast from 13 November 2024 (segment on the Global Carbon Budget from minute 12:50).
