Julia Pongratz Discusses CO₂ Removal at LMU Senior Lecture Series

5 Feb 2025

In her closing lecture, Julia Pongratz explored CO₂ removal, climate targets, and the global path to greenhouse gas neutrality.

How does carbon dioxide removal work – and what role can it play in reaching global climate goals?
These were the central questions addressed by Professor Julia Pongratz, Chair of Physical Geography and Land Use Systems at LMU Munich, in a lecture for participants of the university’s Senior Studies Program (Zentrum Seniorenstudium).

Her talk, titled “CO₂ Removal – How Does It Work?”, offered a clear overview of the scientific foundations of carbon dioxide removal (CDR), the current state of global climate change, and the measures needed to reach greenhouse gas neutrality in Germany and worldwide.

Pongratz also emphasized the role of technological and natural climate solutions, and discussed the importance of aligning national strategies with the Paris Agreement targets.

The lecture marked the conclusion of the winter semester series “A Journey Through the World of Technology: Achievements and Consequences”, hosted by LMU’s Senior Studies Program – a platform for lifelong learning and academic engagement with pressing societal issues.
