German perspective at the UK Greenhouse Gas Removal Event

30 Sept 2025

At the closing event of the UK research programme on carbon dioxide removal, Julia Pongratz reports on the latest developments in Germany and the EU.

The celebratory UK Greenhouse Gas Removal Event at the Royal Institution in London is the culmination of the UK funding measure on CDR, the GGR-D Programme, that ran for 4.5-years. It brings together researchers and innovators from the programme with policymakers, businesses, NGOs, investors and others with an interest in CDR.

The second day sees a discussion on Global Growth: What are the latest developments in other countries including Germany, the United States, India and Australia? Speakers included Noah Deich - Founder of Carbon180 and formerly Senior Advisor on CCUS and CDR policy, US Department of Energy, Dr Andrew Lenton – Director, Permanent Carbon Locking Future Science Platform, CSIRO, and Asitava Sen, Co-Founder and CEO, Carbon Removal India Alliance (CRIA), next to Professor Dr Julia Pongratz from LMU and spokesperson of the German Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Programme, CDRterra.

Julia Pongratz reports on the CDR landscape in Germany and the EU and provides insights from CDRterra’s first phase of research, including how research has expanded the CDR portfolio in Germany, which easy entry points have been identified to scale up CDR despite overall targets appearing difficult to achieve, and recommendations for overcoming implementation hurdles.
