Kick-off of the Horizon Europe project “NextGenCarbon”

17 Jan 2025

In a virtual meeting across Europe, the 5-year project took up its work.

In support of the EU's climate and sustainability targets the Horizon Europe project “NextGen-Carbon - Next Generation Modelling of Terrestrial Carbon Cycle by assimilation of in-situ campaigns and Earth Observations” took up its work in early 2025.

NextGenCarbon includes a team of 22 partners and is coordinated by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The project will develop a novel framework to improve our understanding and quantification of greenhouse gas budgets, incorporating enhanced ecosystem data, advanced modeling, scenario predictions, and climate policy support. This way, substantial knowledge gaps impeding predictive capabilities and the ability to eval-uate the EU's climate policy targets will be closed. A core component, led by LMU, will be delivering more accurate estimates of CO2 emissions and removals related to land-use activities, which play a crucial role in the annual Global Carbon Budgets and are increasingly important for cross-validating national greenhouse gas budgets.

A position at LMU as postdoctoral researcher in NextGenCarbon has just opened. More information here.
